Linking Hearts Adoption Project
Army Community Service (ACS) and the Pulaski
County Division of Family Services provide adoption options for military
families interested in adoption. An office is located in Army Community Service
Center for easier access by military families. An annual Linking Hearts Adoption
Sponsorship Picnic is conducted each year during the month of June that allows
families interested in adopting and opportunity to interact with children who
are available for adoption.
The Division of Family Services, Area Advisory
Council on Adoption, and Fort Leonard Wood jointly sponsor the annual
"Linking Hearts" adoption project. The Family Advocacy Program (FAP)
of Army Community Service is the primary coordination activity on Fort Leonard
Wood that plans and conducts this event. Approximately 50 to 75 foster care
children available for adoption and their volunteer chaperons visit Fort Leonard
Wood. Families interested in adopting a child can also have an opportunity to
interact with the children. This event is primarily a minority recruitment
event. Given the diverse backgrounds of military personnel, the program
facilitates the placement of minority and special needs’ children.
Approximately 83 percent of the children awaiting adoption are African-American
or biracial.
